Rising Desertion and Fear in Israeli Soldiers at Gaza Border: Impact on Planned Ground Invasion

In a significant development that could hamper Israels ground invasion of Gaza, reports are emerging of an increase in fear among Israeli soldiers stationed at the border. As the prospect of coming face to face with Hamas soldiers looms ever closer, there is an unprecedented decline in morale amongst the IDF. Some reports indicate that several soldiers have opted to desert their posts due to the extreme stress and fear.

In general, the IDF have a reputation around the world for combat readiness. However, they usually engage in battles remotely using missiles, air strikes and drones far away from their targets, who are often civilians including children. But the fear and anxiety that soldiers are experiencing as they face the prospect of entering Gaza and fighting face to face is having a tangible impact on their readiness and willingness to engage in the operation. This situation has forced the planned ground invasion to be delayed for several days whilst the IDF command tries to resolve it. The official line by the IDF on the matter is that they have delayed due to rain and clouds, a statement that carries a familiar tone to sceptical ears.
